Anderlecht could lose top spot in the Belgian First Division after their unconvincing form extended to a 2-1 loss to KV Mechelen on Friday.
Bidding to regain the title they last won in the 2009/10 campaign, Anderlecht were shocked into going behind at Mechelen s Argosstadion when veteran midfielder David de Storme found the back of the net after 16 minutes.
Mechelen hung onto their lead until the 59th minute, until Anderlecht s Argentine forward Matias Suarez refused to cede possession in the area and stabbed home from close range.
But the hosts again rose to the challenge, helped by a marginal off-side call and a well-weighted through ball from De Storme just two minutes after Anderlecht s equaliser.
The pass still left midfielder Alessandro Cordaro with work to do, but he rounded Anderlecht goalkeeper Silvio Proto before finishing well from a tightening angle.
Suarez went closest as Anderlecht sought their second equaliser of the match, but Mechelen hung on to move into 10th on the table.
Anderlecht could lose their spot atop the standings if Gent who possess a superior goal difference overcome Beerschot on Saturday.
